Coco’s Deep Fried Chicken

If you know me in real life or have been following me for awhile now, you know how much I love my fried chicken. Korean fried chicken, Louisiana fried chicken, you name it — I’ll eat it.

My go-to spot for Korean Fried Chicken (KFC) had always been Seoul Fried Chicken‘s cilantro lime lunch box for $11. I decided to give Coco’s another chance as it was opened in the Northside and I didn’t feel like driving down to Whyte Ave.

Coco promises to serve high quality chicken everyday. The chicken is promised to be free range with no hormones injected or MSG used, and fried with 100% canola oil.

Initially, I visited the Southside location (on Parsons road), which is now called Pop Wow Chicken, approximately 4 years ago. My friends and I didn’t enjoy our meals at all. We all ordered the 8 piece sweet & hot pack for $20.99. The chicken was drenched with sauce and became soggy before getting to our table. The sauce was so potent that you couldn’t taste any of the chicken.

Now, why would I come back if I had a poor experience the first time? It was because my friend kept raving about how good this place is and goes here literally every single week. If a place is that good, I’d have to give it another try. Thanks for the recommendation, Christa!

The Asian in me tried doing some mental math for the most money saving alternative. I knew I was going to get 10 pieces, and tried seeing if getting the packs would be more worth it than the meals. In total, I probably saved about a dollar for buying the meals instead of the packs.

The chicken skin was amazingly thick and crispy. Juicy, moist, and perfectly seasoned on the inside. It surprisingly held its texture after driving home and taking photos which took approximately 30 minutes — yes, the camera eats first. Sometimes I miss eating my food hot… JK.

Tip: order the sauce on the side and dip the chicken. You’d be surprised at how important this step is, and what a difference it makes. The chicken holds its crunch and dipping the sauce allows you to control the amount of flavour to your liking. The perfect balance of having too much sauce and no sauce at all!

Do you prefer SFC or Coco’s Fried Chicken?

They’re both delicious. It’s true SFC has taken over the Korean fried chicken market ever since they opened; however, I think I prefer Coco’s just a wee bit more in terms of texture but my love will always be SFC’s cilantro lime.

Have you tried Coco’s Fried Chicken?? What’d you think!
