Snow Hits YEG (again): BlackBall

Taiwanese dessert trend is coming to YEG! Snowy Village, ZenQ, and Snowy Dessert are all coming soon, as well. I think it all started from the success of Coco’s… I was thrilled hearing about the new snowy ice dessert chain — BlackBall. I’ve never heard about this place until my other foodie snap-chatted me the desserts and knew Ip had to check it out myself. The only other shaved ice I had in the past was from Dream Tea and from restaurants that offer it for dessert. The interior is large and bright with lots tables to fit larger parties. It’s located west Edmonton, on Stony Plain Road. Not sure if it was just me, but I got lost getting there and was confused when I accidentally walked into the shop beside it. It was pretty funny when other people did the same!

My friend and I decided to share everything pictured so we could try more things. Naturally, we ended up getting matcha everything.

Matcha milk tea: I tried the matcha milk tea with 30% sugar and less ice. Even with 30% sugar, it was very sweet. Like I said on my Instagram (@yegcravings), I do not recommend it at all. And here is why — it had a low quality matcha flavor with barely any taste. If anything, it resembled plain sweet milk with a hint of matcha. My friend and I took a couple sips before throwing it out.

Matcha series #2: matcha jelly, red bean, boba, and sweet potato balls. My favourite was the sweet potato balls, although it only came with approximately 4 pieces. You can usually tell when they use old boba if it’s mushy or hard but the boba was fresh and chewy. The red bean was the worst part because it was hard and not cooked enough.

3Q passion fruit green tea: 3Q means it comes with 3 toppings such as boba, lychee pieces, pudding, grass jelly, etc. This drink came with boba and lychee pieces. My friend got it with 70% sugar and less ice. It tastes like your regular passion fruit green tea you could get at Gong Cha with a mild orange favour.

Matcha series #1: matcha pudding, rice ball, sesame mini, and matcha mini. I enjoyed this one more than #2. The matcha overpowered the rice balls so there wasn’t any taste to them. The sesame minis were good but it didn’t compliment the matcha. The matcha minis were good as well, nothing worth mentioning.

Menu is broken down to down into drinks and desserts. It was a tough decision between getting the matcha milk tea or matcha fresh milk… what’s the difference anyways?! I’d go back if I was in the area or if it was a very hot summer day!
